BLACK JACK
Surrounded by mystery, Black Jack, alias Kuroo Hazama, is a shadowy doctor with a two-tone face from a childhood skin graft after a disfiguring accident. Despite studying medicine to honor his savior, he refuses to take final exams in protest against corruption and conservatism in Japanese medicine. Operating on society's fringes, he aids anyone in need regardless of moral judgment, sometimes charging astronomical fees ("including the price of silence"), or providing free care, depending on patients' means and mindset. A misanthrope, he learns humility facing the inevitability of death for his patients.
